Mass Spectrometry Core (MMD-CMSC)
Collaborative Mass Spectrometry Core (CMSC)
The Collaborative Mass Spectrometry Core (CMSC) serves as the analytical core facility for Department of Physiology investigators and others in the MSU community, primarily focusing on lipidomics and metabolomics analysis in mammalian systems. The CMSC features a unique suite of advanced mass spectrometry instrumentation, cutting edge sample preparation and analysis strategies, and robust informatics platforms. This combination of tools enables the CMSC to provide both targeted analysis of selected compounds of interest, and untargeted discovery “omics” experiments featuring the simultaneous detection and quantitation of thousands of potential analytes from only a few minutes of data acquisition. While we offer routine analyses such as those provided by typical core mass spectrometry facilities, we specialize in challenging analyses that lie outside standard MS or LC-MS protocols due to limited sample availability, difficulty of sample preparation, required depth of analytical coverage, or novel and/or difficult targets.
For each analysis, facility personnel will work collaboratively with investigators to identify a suitable sample analysis method based on the investigator’s experimental goals, and subsequently provide strategies for optimal experimental design, sample generation, mass spectrometry sample preparation, and data acquisition. Additionally, Core personnel will analyze, summarize, and facilitate interpretation of acquired “omics” datasets.
Services provided by the Collaborative Mass Spectrometry Core include:
- Lipid/metabolite extraction
- Lipid/metabolite derivatization and SPE
- High Resolution / Accurate Mass direct infusion or LC-MS and MS/MS
- Low resolution direct infusion or LC-MS and MS/MS
- Liquid Extraction Surface Analysis (LESA) MS and MS/MS
- HPLC fraction collection, small molecule analysis, and radioisotope label detection
- Data analysis
- Data interpretation, summarization, and presentation
